DAMASCUS, Jan. 18, 2009-His Excellency President Bashar Al-Assad underlined January 18th, 2009, that a ceasefire in Gaza should simultaneously be accompanied with the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation troops from the entire Gaza Strip, once and one for all lifting of the blockade imposed, and with the opening of all the border Crossings securing the basic needs for the Palestinians.
In a Damascus meeting with the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, His Excellency President Al-Assad asserted the importance that the United Nations, as well as other International Organizations to carry out their full responsibility playing their assigned to role in accordance with the UN Charter, on the basis of which was founded, especially in light of the Israeli occupation forces use of internationally-prohibited weapons, including phosphoric bombs, against the Palestinian People in Gaza Strip. President Al-Assad called for international efforts to be rallied regarding the flow of urgent human assistance, the reconstruction of Gaza Strip.
For his part, Mr. Ki Moon briefed H. E. the President on the meeting to be attended by the UN Secretary General at Sharm Al-Sheikh, as well as on the objectives of this meeting. Further, Mr. Ki Moon highly appreciated the important positive role played by Syria in the region, reiterating his commitment to do every possible for the realization of peace in the Middle East in implementation for related UN resolutions an the principle of the Land for Peace.
In press statements following the meeting, Mr. Ban Ki Moon described his talks with H. E. President Al-Assad as useful and constructive, saying that he has held a very good meeting with President Al-Assad regarding the conditions in Gaza Strip.
The Syrian Vice-president, Mr. Farouk Al-Sharaa’, Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moaalem, Minister Buothaina Shaa’ban the President Advisor for Political and Media Affairs, attended the meeting from the Syrian side.
