DAMASCUS, (March29th 2008)- His Excellency President Bashar Al-Assad declared here today morning the 20th Arab Summit opened with a landmark speech, in which H.E. outlined the main guidelines for joint Arab action in bolstering of growth, development, cooperation, coordination and search for just and comprehensive peace on the bases of related UN Security Council resolutions, legitimacy and Arab Peace Initiative.

" We have acknowledged the importance of peace many years back," said President Assad asserting that the Arab Peace Initiative is " a clear-cut expression of an all-Arab desire for peace". Israel, however, rejects to respond to the demands of the just and comprehensive peace", persisting in its " arrogance and rejection to implement the International Legitimacy resolutions".

President Assad reiterated that " Security is never to be realized for anybody; but through the realization of peace". The peace is " never to be realized; but through the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories"; peace is " never to realized; but through the return of the occupied Golan in full to the line of June 4 1967".

H.E. President Assad urged the Palestinians to unify their ranks and stances as " to restore the rights, the land" securing the " the return of the refugees" voicing the Syrian support for the Yemeni recent initiative for reconciliation among the Palestinians calling for an " immediate lifting of the blockade imposed on Gaza".

President Assad noted that the convening of the Summit in Damascus is an " honour and grand responsibility" noting to the risks and dangers facing the Arab Nation, which is now " not on the brink of danger but within its centre", asserting the need and importance of the " sincere dialogue" that the Arabs are " in the same boat amid the tidy storms" appealing for more of cooperation among Arabs who have a distinguished national gathering basics.

President Assad urged for closer Inter-Arab Economic, Cultural relations, boosting the role of the Arab Language and linking it to the society of knowledge and technology affirming the need for self Arab-reliance and tailored reforms in line with their respective realities on the ground.

Regarding Lebanon, H. E. President Assad reiterated the Syrian " keenness on the Lebanese independence, sovereignty" and the Syrian support for the " National Lebanese consensus" noting, however, that " the key for solution is within the hands of the Lebanese themselves" voicing concern over the Lebanese situation and astonishment for some claims regarding the so-called Syrian interference in the Lebanese Affairs, at a time when every pressure is exerted over Syria as to interfere!

President Assad underlined the Syrian support for Iraq and the importance of the Iraqi " national reconciliations" conducive to the Iraqi " full independence" and "the evacuation of the last occupation soldier" from Iraq calling for more Arab presence in Iraq.

H. E. further expressed the Syrian support for the Sudan " away from foreign interferences in its domestic affairs"

President Assad reiterated the Syrian " condemnation" of terrorism, " one of the main present challenges" asserting, however, that the resistance against occupation is but " the legitimate right for the people" noting that the Israeli State Terrorism is " the most brutal form of terrorism in the modern age".
